Unpredictable disruptions are forcing organizations to facilitate their supply chains by considering the implementation of smart manufacturing technologies. Of the unpredictable disruptions, material shortages were one of the most significant in 2022, which resulted in an increase in companies that are onshoring or nearshoring production. However, onshoring may not be achievable for all organizations, and in this case, sourcing products from faraway locations presents its own challenges. The most significant challenge with offshoring products lies in the unpredictability of tensions and conflicts between countries which can destabilize the flow of products between regions. This article dives deeper into the difficulty of supply chain and inventory management today. Then, the author discusses a smarter method of managing inventory and supply chain planning, which largely involves smart manufacturing technologies. Such technologies include, “the industrial internet of things (IIoT), ML, and industrial automation systems” (Surenian, 2023). The deployment and digitization of smart manufacturing technologies is then analyzed along with its effect on a predictability of smoother supply chain planning processes.
